Chapter 7

Two weeks passed by like normal. Even Ashlee seemed to warm up to me a bit. I took Mama’s suggestion and one Saturday I arrived at the house with ingredients for baked goods. I decided to start with my first baking lesson from Mama.

Cupcakes.

When I first asked Ashlee if she wanted to help me, she seemed a bit skeptical.

“What’s the occasion?”

“Cupcakes are for anytime. You’re talking to a woman with an insatiable sweet tooth.”

Ashlee broke out in a smile and then shrugged. “Okay. Let’s do it.”

So, we spent Saturday baking and decorating cupcakes. Alex and Adrian stopped by mainly to swipe a few cupcakes. Later, Maxwell came in long enough to thank me with a kiss and also grab a cupcake.

Ashlee shared about her crush on the young man I’d seen eyeing her at her birthday party. His name was Randall Potts, but Ashlee called him Randy.

“Just be yourself if you want people to like you. And I have a feeling he does too.”

“How do you know?”

“By the way he was eyeballing you at your birthday party.”

She grabbed the countertop in a panic. “Do you think Dad noticed?”

I tried really hard not to laugh, “Nah.”

Ashlee looked at me, “Don’t mention anything to him. He won’t let me date yet.”

Of course not.

“Between you and me.”

“Thanks, Donna.”

I was on a bit of a high after our afternoon baking session. It was good to know that I could connect with Ashlee.

A week later, Maxwell mentioned Ashlee had a part in a school play. It was a small part but a big deal for a freshman. He invited me and I gladly accepted the invitation, excited to be included in the family affair. My excitement took a tumble when I arrived in the driveway only to see a familiar car. A red BMW.

Keri was back.

I guessed Ashlee invited her to the play too. Interesting that she took off from work to come back just for her niece’s high school play.

I was almost expecting Keri to answer the door, but Ashlee opened the door.

“Hey, Ashlee, are you ready for your big night?”

She opened the door wider and let me inside.

“Hey, Donna.”

I expected her to be more excited, but something was up. I peered over to find Keri and Maxwell standing in the living room across from each other.

Maxwell’s face was contorted in anger.

Had they been arguing?

Keri glared at me and then huffed, “Oh I see now. She’s supposed to be family now. Well, I can leave but it’s not often I get to see my niece. Ashlee told me about this play a few weeks ago and I made plans to take off from work and drive up to see her.”

A bit taken a back, I interrupted the woman’s tirade. “Why can’t we all go to support Ashlee?”

Ashlee spoke softly. She stood beside me with her arms folded looking like she wanted to run and hide. “I only have four tickets, two are for my brothers.”

Maxwell spoke, “And I asked Ashlee to reserve the other two tickets for me and you.
